New research led by the University of East London (UEL) has found that even brief moments of shared play can have an immediate and measurable impact on family connection, bringing parents and children physically and emotionally closer together within seconds.

Awe can support reducing overwhelm and stress by reducing mental ‘noise’ and anxiety, support shifting attention without force, offer gentle novelty without pressure, and increase our sense of connection without demand. Because of the perceptual sensitivity often present in neurodivergent systems, there is the chance that experiences of awe can be even more profound.

Barriers existed from the micro to the macro levels and included family and community attitudes and beliefs, professional training limitations, and resistance and lack of understanding at all levels of Bronfenbrenner's model. These were addressed through a new integrated service delivery model involving collaboration with, and education of, families and professionals, and the harnessing of key players in the medical and educational professions.
