Developmental Model

The PerVigeō model

The developmental model underpinning PerVigeō originated with the work of Dr Patricia Champion (MBE / PhD) in the late 1970's in Christchurch, Aotearoa New Zealand.

Dr Champion and her dedicated team built a brand new approach to supporting children with developmental delays and challenges. 45+ years later the key principles behind her approach remain the same.

  • That children are born into a community, and in order to properly support a child we need to support their family and extended whānau as well

  • That development is multifaceted and this most often requires a team approach

  • That each child has unique potential to be realised irrespective of their developmental challenges

  • That best outcomes for children occur when the team partners with parents

  • That the approach needs to continuously improve as research and developmental neuroscience evolves

Although Dr Champion is from a pakeha background, her model is closely aligned with a traditional whānau-based approach to health.
