Dr Patricia Champion with co-founder, Felicity Champion.
The PerVigeō model
The developmental model underpinning PerVigeō originated with the work of Dr Patricia Champion (MBE / PhD) in the late 1970's in Christchurch, Aotearoa New Zealand.
Dr Champion and her dedicated team built a brand new approach to supporting children with developmental delays and challenges. 45+ years later the key principles behind her approach remain the same.
That children are born into a community, and in order to properly support a child we need to support their family and extended whānau as well
That development is multifaceted and this most often requires a team approach
That each child has unique potential to be realised irrespective of their developmental challenges
That best outcomes for children occur when the team partners with parents
That the approach needs to continuously improve as research and developmental neuroscience evolves
Although Dr Champion is from a pakeha background, her model is closely aligned with a traditional whānau-based approach to health.
